Have you ever come across any hard time in your life? Feeling extremely busy and tough during the exam period? Having a bad relationship with your parents? Failing the exam? You may call those situations “valleys”. Now, think of the moments you really enjoy. Getting a prize on the stage? Beating a strong team in an interschool game? Being praised by your teacher? Call those “peaks”! I am going to recommend senior form students a book called “Peaks and Valleys” written by Spencer Johnson. “Peaks and Valleys” is a short but meaningful story. The print is large. The words are repeated. You may need to check the dictionary sometimes when you read the first chapter. After finishing the first one, you will see the words again and again. Then you will find it easier. It is about a young boy who came across some hard time and, of course, some good time in life during his journey from his home, the valley, to the Peak. The ideas in the story are impressive and inspirational. Many people fear hard time in life. After reading about the ideas of “valleys and peaks”, you will have less fear but more power. Hard times and good times are actually linked, just like valleys and peaks. A valley will eventually lead you to a peak and vice versa so it is natural to have both good and bad moments in life. The book teaches you how to get through the hard time and keep the good time longer. Here are some thought-provoking ideas from the book to share with you: Peaks and valleys are not just the good and bad times that happened to you. They are also how you feel inside and respond to outside events. The errors you make in today’s good times create tomorrow’s bad times. The wise things you do in today’s bad time create tomorrow’s good times. Read the book for more helpful ideas! If you find it difficult to read the English, read the Chinses version first and enjoy your second read with an English one. Surely, both your mind and English knowledge will be enriched.
