A baby was born for the sake of her elder sister, Kate. The sisters’ parents decided to give birth to a daughter, Anna, whose genetic makeup is engineered to be the same as Kate’s so that Anna can unlimitedly donate body tissues to Kate, who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia, a blood and bone marrow cancer. Since her birth, Anna had been hospitalized a lot of times so that doctors can take different tissues from her to sustain Kate’s health and normal life as a teenage girl. Anna was always willing to help her sister as what she had been donating are tissues that have unlimited supply in our bodies such as cells and blood. All those kept Kate alive and Anna was happy to have her sister around. However, at the age of 13, Anna was told she would need to donate one of her kidneys to Kate. The kidney would not grow back; she would have only one kidney left which might affect her health and there was a chance she could not play ice hockey, her favorite sport, again after the surgery. Caught between her sister’s life, which would end without Anna’s kidney, and her own future, Anna made a decision. This book provokes a lot of thoughts on the morality of genetically-manufactured babies, the value and meaning of a human life and people’s own choices in life. It is worth reading for improving English and reviewing your own life.
