The Book Thief is about a young illiterate girl Liesel who stole a book, The Grave Digger’s Handbook, from the grave diggers when her brother was buried during World War 2. She was soon adopted by a Germen family and started to learn the alphabet in order to read the book. Her foster father taught her the letters day by day. Then she was very fond of learning with him, became happier and started to step out from the sorrow of losing her brother and leaving her mother. However at that time the Nazi stared to burn books. Liesel stole those abandoned books secretly and read them. She also borrowed books from a rich lady who possessed a personal library. Years after years she could read and write despite the harsh war time. She fell in love with words and books which eventually made her a writer when she grew up. The most charming part of the book is Liesel's braveness, determination and love towards books and words. Acquiring knowledge is expensive and difficult during war time as only the rich can possess books but Liesel made full use of every chance to learn and tried to read whatever books she could access. Many youngsters nowadays are way too lucky to get access to knowledge easily but seldom do they treasure the chance to learn. Don’t you know that children in the developing countries need to walk an hour in the mountains to go to school every day? Knowing how fortunate you are to be able to access to education, you should treasure the opportunity and enjoy learning and reading!
