Long ago, there was a great king called Shahriah. He was a good king – until he found his wife loved another man. The King was very angry and asked the executioner to cut off her head. Every night after that, the King lay in his great bed all alone and very sad. He did not know what to do. At last he called for the Wazir, the chief of his servants. The Wazir was so glad when the King wanted to get married again. But the King felt women were bad, so he had an idea. The King asked the Wazir every morning to bring a girl for him, and the executioner must cut off the girl’s head. For three years King Shabriah married a new wife everyday. The Wazir was so unhappy, but he had a clever and beautiful daughter, Sheherezade. She told the King an interesting story and the King liked her so much that he let her live one day longer than all the other young girls. Night after night, week after week, month after month, Sheherezade told the King many different stories. Each story was new and in this way she helped save many more young girls'lives.
