Lord of the Flies - William Golding The story begins with a group of boys stranded on a deserted island longing for rescue. The well-behaved, orderly children led by Ralph agree to establish law and order on the island. Gradually, Ralph’s leadership is overtaken by Jack who leads the children to savagery. The two leaders actually represent the two conflicting impulses that exist within all human beings: we have the instinct to live by rules but we are also born with the instinct to gratify our immediate desires. The two conflicting forces are affected by our upbringing and the external world. Who wins the battle? Do you think there is absolute victory of one instinct over the other? Do you think some symbolic characters actually exist in our ‘civilized’ world? I hope you enjoy the story. Read the story every five years and I am sure you react differently.
