Are you looking forward to a pain-free life? Can you imagine what your life will be if you are assigned the job you will perform for the rest of your life only at the age of twelve? What does a utopian mean to you? Lois Lowry, the author, depicts a harmonious society where everything is under control, including family units, weather, jobs, etc. In the book, Jonas’s world is pain-free and his life has lost contact with the ideas of ‘family’ and ‘love’. The community he lives in uses pills to suppress ‘emotion’ of all the people. Jonas lives in a standard family unit with his mother (a judge) and father (a ‘Nurturer’). He is selected to be ‘Receiver of Memory’ because of his unusual ‘Capacity to See-Beyond’, which is an ability to do something unusual, such as see colour, which the other people cannot. The story is thought-provoking. It allows us to reflect on the issues of euthanasia, genetic engineering, freedom… Don’t miss out if you are interested in science fiction.
