The story begins with the marriage of Mildred, a goldsmith's mild and modest daughter, and Golding, his industrious and temperate apprentice and of Gertrude, another daughter who is egotistic, and Sir Petronel, a swindler who only possesses a title but no money at all. Sir Petronel takes Gertrude her dowry and sends her off in a coach to an inexistent castle he promised to give her in prior to a rush to set off for Virginia with his "partner" Quicksilver after Quicksilver has robbed the goldsmith. Meanwhile, the circumspect and careful Golding has become a deputy alderman. Quicksilver and Petronel are shipwrecked on the Isle of Dogs and are charged for their actions. After the time in prison, where they regret to their schemes and dishonesty, Golding has released them.
