The crofting life in the era of Seond World War permeate the main theme of The Field of Sighing is partly autobiographic and partly fictional. Not only is the crofting way of life depicted by the book, but also the startling natural beauty of the area, varying from the majesty of the mountains and the stateliness of the sea being the background of the book to the warmth of the meadows and flowers. The author's narrate the members of the small community, especially his grandmother being a picture of immense importance of his life are well specificed. Everyday incident of the community is, of course, mentioned humourously and perceptionally but also the public wisdom and traditions there.
