In the light of the recollection of his early life In Ireland and Scotland during the early 1900s, Children of the Dead End written by Patrick Macgill's first novel tells the story of Dermod Flynnm, an independent and active youth, who earns a scanty and hard living as an planetary farm hand in Donegal and Couty Tyrone. No sooner is he a gang labourer and navvy at Kinlochleven near Fort William than his voracious read shows his talent as a writer. Ulimately he goes to Fleet Street and be a journalist. Much to our attention Children of the Dead End is unflinching in its depiction of the almost slavery of the poor in Scotland and Ireland at the beginning of 1900s. Also with humor and extraordinary characters, Children of the Dead End sold 50 thousands copies a year in the 1920s. Being a literary fiction portraying the dark history of Ireland and Scotland, the book influences considerably deep in that blazing obsession.
